Good Times :: Media Television Shows Papers
Good Times Originally aired on CBS in 1974 as a spinoff of the sitcom Maude, Good Times was a Black situation comedy based on the everyday lives of a Black Chicago family during the height of the civil rights movement (Deane, 2004). The cast starred Esther Rolles as the mother Florida Evans who first appeared as the maid in the television show Maude, John Amos as the father James Evans who starred in the hit miniseries Roots, comedian Jimmie Walker who played the oldest son James Evans Jr. (JJ), Ja'net DuBois as neighbor and friend of the Evans family Willona Woods, Ralph Carter who played the youngest son Michael Evans, and Anderson Bern Nadette Stanis as daughter Thelma Evans (Deane, 2004). Good Times took place in the assimilated hybrid minstrelsy genre of Black sitcoms which means that it often had offensive stereotypical aspects present such as mammy and sambo characters, but these characteristics took place in a traditional white sitcom setting and often had references to the Black civil rights movement that was taking place at the time. Originally created to show African Americans in a different more positive light, it gained popularity with Black and White audiences quickly and rated number seventeen for the 1973-1974 seasons (Ingram, 2004). As the show proceeded however, it began to drift away from its original purpose as the character JJ's popularity began to grow. Often criticized for his similarities to buffoonish minstrel characters in early television history, JJ was seen as doing a disservice to the show causing Esther Rolles and John Amos to leave. Attempting to continue the show and regain ratings, the show's producers centered episodes around the hijinks of JJ, but alas the show's ratings continued to fall and the show was cancelled. This brings us to the question at hand. Was Good Times a show that portrayed Blacks in a positive manner to the American public, or was it more of the nail in the coffin to the positive identity of Black America? Positive Aspects Good Times was an interesting 1970's television comedy series that explored the life of a poor black family. This family was simply trying to get by and have a good life in the projects of Chicago. The Evans family was a family that faced real problems on the show and encountered many different situations which they had to overcome. When the show was debuted on February 1, 1974, the series starred John Amos and Esther Rolle as James and Maude (the parents) (Ingram).

Clinic management system Essay
Introduction A system is a collection of elements that are organized for a common purpose. The word sometimes describes the organization or plan itself (and is similar in meaning to method, as in ââ¬Å"I have my own little systemâ⬠) and sometimes describes the parts in the system (as in ââ¬Å"computer systemâ⬠). A computer system consists of hardware components that have been carefully chosen so that they work well together and software components or programs that run in the computer. This concept includes Information System. Information system can be defined as any means of communicating knowledge from one source to another, and/or from one person to another. On the other hand, an information system is designed to provide the best possible information to its users. Information systems typically refer to computerized methods of searching, storing and retrieving information. An information system is all about providing the most usable information needed, and is there to empower users and equip them with the tools to do their jobs most effectively. An information system offers a litany of benefits that help to make the process of managing information easier. Central access, easy back up, central distribution of information, easy record keeping, as well as easy customer trait identification, are just a few of the benefits offered by an information system. Central access means all organization members have one point to access all organizationally public information and increases efficiency. Having information in a variety of locations can be cumbersome and cause information to be overlooked. With easy back up, the chances of lost data are decreased and organizational staff will tend to back up more regularly as the system is easy to navigate. To receive the greatest benefit overall, it is important to understand that it is an adaptable tool that should progress as your business progresses. Information systems are rarely innovative business solutions. They are designed to grow with you and enhance your organizationââ¬â¢s information delivery in the process. In Computer System, It includes database for storing data and information. Not-for-profit organizations must track information about people including volunteers, clients, potential donors, current donors, event attendees, who support or who might support their programs and services. Managing this information is crucial. A database allows you to manage and use an incredible variety of information easily. Databases are easy to set-up, easy to manipulate and easy to use. A database allows you to maintain order in what could be a very chaotic environment. Employees and volunteers of not-for-profit organizations have to manage existing resources very carefully. There may not be the resources to hire a full-time database manager or a short-term consultant. Initial data base structure can be very basic, easy to use and to maintain. Databases can be expanded and manipulated as your organization grows and your resources increase. Background of the Study A Clinic in Dr. Arcadio Santos National High School provides health care for the students thru regular physical and nutritional assessment, operational instructions and by giving emphasis on the ideals of a safe, healthy and drug free environment. Dr. Arcadio Santos National High School was conceived merely todecongest the big enrollment of then Paraà ±aque Municipal High School that was in 1991. This was in under the supervision of Mrs. Rosa V. Sioson, the principal of PMHS. The school was named then PMHS Annex San Martin de Porres. It has a total number of 804 freshmen and 422 sophomore enrollees with 38 teachers. A two-storey building with 16 rooms situated along Km. 15 East Service Road, South Super Highway, San Martin de Porres, Paraà ±aque City under the stewardship of Mr. Urbano E. Agustin as Officer-in-charge, was the only building in use that time. Steady growth of enrollment occurred. 1993, because Dr. Filemon S. Salas, then Schools Division Superintendent of Pasay City Division, advocated and recommended the establishments of more autonimous municipal high school in Paraà ±aque, school independence is worked out. Through the collaborative effort of the school administration, the Parents Teachers Association, the municipal officials and the community itself, Audience and hearings were made. Resolution was passed. And with the authorship of Atty. Manuel de Guia, municipal councilor an chairperson of committee of Education, a Municipal Ordinance No. 93-10 Series of 1993 was approved making PMHS-Annex-San Martin de Porres an independent secondary school. The name Dr. Arcadio Santos, a native son of Paraà ±aque with exemplary reputation was adopted. Its immediate autonomy benefited much the youth and community of District II specifically Brgy. San Martin de Porres. By 1994, enrollment tripled. From 1301 in 1993, it rose to 3033. An influx of teachers also occured to meet the teaching demands of students. This was also the year that Department of Education Culture and Sports in accordance with the guidelines in DECS Order NO., s. of 1989, approved and recognized Dr. Arcadio Santos High School as an independent secondary school. This year on September 1, a mass appointment of teachers, 72 items, were given by the local government under the mayoral ship of Dr. Pablo Olivarez. September 1 also became the basis of the celebration of the schoolââ¬â¢s foundation day. School Year 1994-1995 sprouted another school in the name of DASHS Masville Annex. Mrs. Virginia B. Vecino was designated officer-in-charge with 167 teachers and almost 300 students. Due to an unavoidable circumstances however, it was closed in the same year. In 1995, another four-storey building with 24 rooms was constructed to meet the increasing classroom needs of the stud entry under the local fund chaired by then Mayor Olivarez. A year after, a two-storey building was erected through the country wide Development Fund of Cong. Roilo Golez. The building is now utilized as the school library in the second floor and three classrooms for THE-I.A. in the ground floor. In 1996, DASHS Annex was reopened. This time it found its haven at Don Galo in juxtaposition with the Don Galo Elementary School. Mrs. Concepcion Bernaldez, the assistant school principal, was designated officer-in-charge. It had 330 students; First and Second year level with 16 teachers. In 1997, DASHS annex found its way back again to Masville with a total population of 994. This was upon the completion of a four-storey building with 16 rooms sponsored by Mayor Joey P. Marquez. In 1998, a complete secondary annex came to existence. Now it has a total population of 1443 and 34 teachers administering the needs of the student body under the supervision of Dr. Teodulo N. Timtiman, II as Officer-in-charge. The fourth building named Golez Building sponsored by Cong. Roilo S. Golez, himself, has found its way. This is a three-storey edifice with six classrooms and the ground floor is an open space used for programs and some other special occasions of the school. August 22, 2000, a major event happened. Dr. Arcadio Santos High was converted into Dr. Arcadio Santos National High School in the City of Paraà ±aque through a Republic Act No. 8844. Thios was made possible through the effort of no other than the Lone Representative of Paraà ±aque Congressman Roilo Golez. Truly, Dr. Arcadio Santos National High School after a decade of existence has reached its speak of excellence be it academic or structure wise. Its aim to serve par excellence and produce a productive and competitive citizen is needed a fruition of existence. Statement of the Problem General Problem The general problem of the study is the manual operations in generating treatment report and monitoring the patientââ¬â¢s ailments. Specific Problem How to easily manage the school clinic treatment record? Using manual system, the assigned clinic staff is hard for them to manage, organize and generate all reports in the clinic especially in the Treatment Report. How could they monitor the total number of ailments and how do they generate a report every month? All information of ailments collected will be store in the log book and then they just make a report before the end of the month. How could they give an update to the DEPED (Department of education) division of Paraà ±aque for the medical supplies needed by the clinic? The Treatment Report will be submitted to the head office to review all the types of ailments and to produce a needs of the clinic especially the medicines. Objectives of the Study General Objectives The general objectives of the study are to design and develop software that will enhance the existing Treatment Report System for a better one. Specific Objectives They can easily manage their record process using the computerized treatment report with monitoring patientââ¬â¢s ailments. Managing the records daily would be easier with the help of the proposed system without having difficulties in which the nurse and the dentist can supervise all the needs of medications for each patient. The proposed system will automatically count the total number of ailments every week. Instead of Monthly Report, the nurse and the dentist will generate the report weekly by the use of the proposed system. They can easily update the DEPED (Division of Paranaque) regarding the medical supplies of the school clinic. By the use of a proposed system, they can send request to the main office for the medical supply weekly. Scope and the Delimitation Scope The scope of the study can record the students and school personnel information who admitted inside the school clinic. It can automatically optimize in managing all the records together with the medication needs of the patients. The information including the name, age, grade/year level, address, contact number and etc., can modify and update the data by using control selection of the proposed system. The study is only for Dr. Arcadio Santos National High School (clinic). It has a security that the School Nurse, School Dentist, students or other school personnel who can only access the system. Also, using their own account in the propoed system the Nurse and the Dentist can generate the reports and can update the information stored in the database. Delimitation The proposed system has an account security for the users so that all unauthorized person outside the school premises are not allowed to use. Conceptual Framework Figure 1.0 shows the existing system for generating a Treatment Report every month. First, the Medical staff will ask question to the patient which includes Name, Address and Contact Number together with the ailments. All the information gathered are manually Record in the Log Book that serves as a database. After recording all information, the medical staff will now check if there is an available first aid medication for the particular ailment. If no, the patient will be transfer to the other clinics and the medical staff will now record the medical needs inside the school clinic. After a month, the Medical staff will now count all the total number of ailments and generate a Treatment Report by using a bar chart. It is conflict for the staff to generate a report because of too many record stored in Log book. The report will be submitted to the main office of the Department of Education (DEPED) Division of Paraà ±aque and after reviewing the chart, it is the time to send a supply of medicines into the school. Conceptual Framework Figure 1.1 shows the Computerized System for generating a Treatment Report every week instead of monthly report. First, the Medical staff will ask question to the patient which includes Name, Address and Contact Number together with the ailments. All the information gathered will type in the proposed system with SQL database. After recording all information, the medical staff will now search to the database for the available medicines. Every week, the Medical Staff generate the Treatment Report by using the proposed system. It is easy for them to accomplish the report because it is automatically tally all the ailments records counted saved on the database. Due to that, using manual system seems to be the only solutions in managing the daily works. The system will help out the user in the clinic in managing the work. 2. On-line Constructions of Metrosexuality and Masculinities. ââ¬Å"A metrosexual can be defined as a man who is narcissistic in nature, loves his urban lifestyle and is a straight man who is in touch with his feminine side.â⬠According to Matthew Hall on his Cultural Studies On-line Constructions of Metrosexuality and Masculinities. A British journalist named Mark Simpson devised this word. It can be said that any urban male of any sexual orientation who spends a lot of time and money on his appearance and lifestyle is known as a metrosexual. There are a large number of celebrities out there who are famous icons such as David Beckham, Brad Pitt, Robbie Williams, P. Diddy and George Clooney. 3. Mediwise Clinic Management Software ââ¬Å"Mediwise Clinic Management Software is a fully integrated solution for the business and clinical needs of medical medicine clinics.â⬠According to the internet Cynthia Anderson tells that the Mediwise addresses of all the facilityââ¬â¢s data processing needs: Patient Accounting, EMR, Referral Management, Scheduling, Case and Encounters Management and Financials. It provides physicians, clinicians, and health care executives with the necessary information to make critical decisions about the patient and the enterprise. Local Literature 1. According to Dean Francis Alfair, Filipino men are spending millions to look and feel good. As was stated in his article, ââ¬Å"Machos in the Mirrorâ⬠, a metrosexual like himself doesnââ¬â¢t generally think of himself as vain, but then thereââ¬â¢s this incident where Mr. Alfair remember from high school: some of his friends were assembled at his house so that they could all ride together to a party. As they were getting dressed in their Spandau Ballet-inspired finery (then the height of fashion), one of the barkada produced, from out of the depths of his bag, a can of mousse, which none of them hapless males had ever seen or even heard of before. Naturally, they all had to squirt some into their hands and smear it on their hair. Not knowing that they were then supposed to blow-dry or otherwise style it, they left the house feeling snazzy, while looking pretty much the same as they had prior to applying the mousse at most, their hair was a little damper, vaguely crispy in texture, and certainly stickier than before. But they felt utterly transformed. 2. According to Noel Manucom, head of planning and strategy at Splash cosmetics, the quest for beauty may also be perceived as a quest for social equality. ââ¬Å"Filipinos, especially those in the C and D (classes), are still influenced by their colonial mentality that white skin and a tall nose are what those in high society have,â⬠Manucom says. ââ¬Å"They may not be able to afford to have their nose done, but the desire to have a fairer skin can be met by buying products.â⬠In fact, the double-digit growth in skin care popularity among Filipino males over the last six years is largely attributable to skin-whitening formulas. Pinoys are still devoted to hair care products and fragrance above anything else ââ¬â with growing interest in bath washes, oral hygiene, and weight loss or gain ââ¬â yet skin care is acknowledged to be the main fuel of the Philippine beauty industry. 3. According to Fairview Physician Associates -Medical student-run health clinics have become popular programs among medical schools for fostering education and community service among students. The proliferation of these clinics has not, however, coincided with a better understanding of these programsââ¬â¢ impact on medical education or public health. There are no data of how many student-run clinics exist or how many schools have one. Foreign Studies 1. Clinics Management System (CMS) based on Patient Centered Process Ontology ââ¬Å"A major problem faced by todayââ¬â¢s healthcare is the increasing diversity and differentiation. New medical specialties are constantly created: there exist a large number of roles in patient care and many different public and private organizationsâ⬠According to Prasad M. Jayaweera (University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka) the process oriented business ontologies are developed in customer centered manner in order to develop business systems applications to provide more and more value added services to target consumers. This trend is also valid in healthcare sector although there are some restrictions and limitations that can be noticed in Sri Lankan. 2. Night By Elie Wiesel (665 words) Essay Example For Students
Night By Elie Wiesel (665 words) Essay Night By Elie WieselNever shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned mylife into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed. Never shallI forget that smoke. Never shall I forget the little faces of the children, whose bodies I saw turned into wreaths of smoke beneath a silent blue sky. Nevershall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever. Never shall Iforget that nocturnal silence which deprived me, for all eternity, of the desireto live. Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my souland turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I forget these things, even if I amcondemned to live as long as God Himself. Never. -Elie Wiesel TheHolocaust-the mass murder of European Jews by the Nazis during World War II. Itwas the unthinkable, the horrific murder of 6 million Jews and millions ofcivilians of different ethnic and racial backgrouds. It was average men enteringthe German army and turned into Nazis, cold-blooded killers. It was theconnotation of Holocaust which became Night, by Elie Wiesel. This paints apicture, full of vivid imagery and truth, about the genocide of his own people.Elie witnesses the starvation, brutal beating, and eventual death of hisfriends, family, and fellow Jews. Wiesel, himself, survived Auschwitz, Buna,Buchenwald, and Gleiwitz, all German concentration camps, where atrocities suchas cremation and murder hung thickly in the air like a heavy cologne. BornSeptember 30, 1928, Eliezer Wiesel led a life representative of many Jewishchildren. Growing up in a small village in Romania, his world revolved aroundfamily, religious study, community, and God. Yet his family, community, and hisinnocent faith were destroyed upon the deportation of his village in 1944. Oneof the main topics in this book is how Elie, a boy of strong religious faith, along with many of his fellow jews, lose their faith in God due to the horrificeffects of the concentration camps. Elie Wiesel lived his early childhood in thetown of Transylvania, in Hungary, during the early 1940s. At a young age, Elietook a strong interest in Jewish religion, while he spent most of his timestudying the Talmud. Eventually he makes aquaintances with Moshe the Beadle whotakes Elie under his wing, and also instructs him more in depth of the ways ofthe Talmud and cabbala. Elie is taught to question God for answers throughMoshes instruction. Moshe is sent away to a concentration camp, and upon hisreturn, Elie finds that he has changed dramatically. This is a foreshadowing ofwhat will become of Elies faith in the strength and power of God. Moshehad changed. ..He no longer talked to me of God or the cabbala, but only of whathe had seen.(4) The first evidence of Elies loss of faith, is while hequestions God during the selection process. This process is concerned withseparating the young, strong, and healthy Jews, from the old, weak, sickly,and/or infants. The Jews were separated from their loved ones who wereimmediately sent to the crematory or burned in large fire pits. Elie saysgoodbye to his mother and sister, unknowing that it will be the last time thathe will ever see them again. Many of his fellow Jews began to pray and recitethe Kaddish, a Jewish prayer for the dead, with hopes to console their owngrievances for the loss they had suffered. However, Elie questions, Whyshould I bless His name? The Eternal, Lord of the Universe, the All-Powerful andTerrible, was silent. What had I to thank Him for?(31) Elie witnesses a loadof children being dumped into a pit of flames which he labels as the Angel ofDeath, and at this point, the diminishing effects of the first night of camplife are already taking a toll on Elies religious faith and personalself-worth. The final deterioration of Elies idea of God, where he renouncesall belief in His existence, is during the funeral of 3 Jewish males who werehanged the day before. One of whom was a child, so mere in weight, whom struggle. .u974c0f821a611157d080450f1f3b6ea6 , .u974c0f821a611157d080450f1f3b6ea6 .postImageUrl , .u974c0f821a611157d080450f1f3b6ea6 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u974c0f821a611157d080450f1f3b6ea6 , .u974c0f821a611157d080450f1f3b6ea6:hover , .u974c0f821a611157d080450f1f3b6ea6:visited , .u974c0f821a611157d080450f1f3b6ea6:active { bor der:0!important; } .u974c0f821a611157d080450f1f3b6ea6 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u974c0f821a611157d080450f1f3b6ea6 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u974c0f821a611157d080450f1f3b6ea6:active , .u974c0f821a611157d080450f1f3b6ea6:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u974c0f821a611157d080450f1f3b6ea6 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative; } .u974c0f821a611157d080450f1f3b6ea6 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u974c0f821a611157d080450f1f3b6ea6 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u974c0f821a611157d080450f1f3b6ea6 . ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u974c0f821a611157d080450f1f3b6ea6:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u974c0f821a611157d080450f1f3b6ea6 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left: 18px; top: 0; } .u974c0f821a611157d080450f1f3b6ea6 .u974c0f821a611157d080450f1f3b6ea6-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u974c0f821a611157d080450f1f3b6ea6:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The National Socialist German Workers' Pa rty and nazism Essay

Soft HRM Essay Example
Soft HRM Essay Soft HRM is associated with the concept of a high commitment work system, (Walton, 1985 cited in Truss et al 1997) this is aimed at eliciting a commitment so that behaviour is primarily self regulated rather than controlled by sanctions and pressures external to the individual and relations within the organisation are based on high levels of trust (Wood, 1996. p 41). Trust is a key element associated with soft HRM as by trusting the employees commitment is generated. This is the opposite view to the hard model of HRM, which is based on the assumption that employees are not to be trusted to the high level expressed within the soft model. The hard model assumes that employees are not capable of being left to their own devices but instead that they need constant monitoring if the organisations objectives are to be achieved. This leads to a major conflict between the two models as the soft model places emphasis on the idea that control comes from commitment (Purcell, 1993) rather than through performance systems, performance management and tight control as with the hard model suggests. Storey (1992) stated that it is human capability and commitment which distinguishes successful organisations the human resource ought to be nurtured (p.26). If commitment is to be retained HRM needs to train and develop their employees. This idea is emphasised within the soft model. The need to retain knowledge workers is one of the biggest challenges, which faces organisations today. In America, Ford offered a PC, printer and Internet access to all employees for $5 a month. The idea was that by being able to communicate amongst themselves much more easily, being more able to use the computers at work and becoming more acquainted with the mindset of the e-consumer, that it would make the whole organisation much more customer focused. Individual development, flexibility, self-fulfilment, high trust, autonomy and adaptability are all aspects that are closely associated with the soft model (Morris et al. 2000). There has been some criticism of these concepts, which the soft model adopts. It has been argued the concepts of commitment, flexibility and quality are somewhat ambiguous and open to debate and interpretation (Purcell, 1993). Flexibility has been noted to come in a number of different forms; it could be to express the value of employee upskilling, development and initiative or the numerical and financial flexibility to be achieved by treating labour as a variable cost-to-be-minimised input (Atkinson, 1984 cited in Legge, 1995). Prieto (1993 cited in Truss et al. 1997) noted three types of flexibility; numerical (flexibility in the number of people in the workforce), wage (where wage adjustments can be linked to profits) and functional (where there is the broadening of skills). He stated that they were all very different and in many respects contradictory. He commented that one method of numerical flexibility may be to alter the size of the workforce by using short-term or temporary contracts at the expense of permanent contracts which would be much more attractive to employees. This would in turn have an effect on the employees level of commitment. Furthermore there is also question as to what is being referred to when commitment is talked about, what exactly is the employee to be committed to? (Legge, 1995). Are employees committed the organisation, work group, immediate supervisor, union or occupation (Legge, 1995). Other criticism has come from Kennoy (1990 cited in Truss et al. 1997) who argues that the goals of quality, flexibility, commitment and integration are not mutually compatible and may be difficult to achieve in practice. There is debate as to whether committed workers are more productive as it has never been proved (Bassett, 1994 cited in Truss et al. 1997). Within the hard model of HRM emphasis is placed on strategic direction, integration and performance managing techniques such as appraisal. Hard HRM is concerned with achieving competitive advantage by the close integration of human resource policies, systems and activities with business strategy. They view the HRM as a way of driving the strategic objectives of the organisation (Legge, 1995). The hard model views the employee as largely a factor of production, along with other resources such as capital and land and an expense of doing business rather than the only resource capable of turning inanimate factors of production into wealth Tyson and Fell, 1986, p. 135 cited in Legge, 1995). The element of integration that the hard model emphasises can be further expanded into two different aspects. The first is the external fit which is the view that the human resource policies and practices are closely linked to the strategic objectives of the organisation and the second is the internal fit which is the coherence of the human resource polices and practices (Baird and Meshoulam, 1988 cited in Truss et al. 1987). Although soft HRM does consider integrating HR policies with business strategies as important, its emphasis is placed on treating employees as valued assets, a source of competitive advantage through their commitment, adaptation and high quality. (Legge, 1995) The stress is therefore on human resource policies that deliver resourceful humans (Morris and Burgoyne, 1973, cited in Legge, 1995) in the case of the soft model. The hard is more about how the HR policies can deliver the organisations objectives rather than developing employees, which can. Although both consider different aspects of the organisation they are necessarily incompatible. It would seem that these two aspects could be brought together to increase the chances of corporate objectives being obtained and competitive advantaged being maximised. A study carried out by Kane and Crawford (1999) looking barriers to effective HRM found that although both hard and soft aspects of HRM are seldom effectively implemented in practice there was little evidence of conflict or incompatibility between the two theoretical perspectives in their results. They also found that HRM effectiveness could be achieved by both approaches as effectiveness is related to both organisational strategy and objectives and to employee motivation and development. Legge (1995) comments that potential tensions however could rise through this aspect of strategic integration, as she believes there to be an amount of contradiction amongst the models. At a surface level she believes that problems arise from ambiguities in the conceptual language of both models. She argues that the problem arises due to the fact that while fit with strategy would argue a contingent design of HRM policy, internal consistency- at least with the soft human resource values associated with mutuality would argue an absolutist approach to the design of employment policy (Legge, 1995). The strategic fit which the hard model refers to can be extremely tight in nature and there is little or no evidence that tight fit leads to positive outcomes. Furthermore it implies that there is no flexibility and rigidity, which could be detrimental to the organisation (Lengnick-Hall and Lengnick- Hall, 1990, cited in Truss et al. 1997). It is argued that fit may not be attainable, or desirable, in a diversified organisation. In conclusion it is clearer to understand why there has been so much difficulty amongst writers and academics to develop a single model of human resource management, which could be used in practice by businesses and organisations. To begin with there is a huge amount of differing opinion as to what exactly human resource management is. It is a relatively new concept and the literature would suggest that it still a huge amount of debate as to exactly what it is. Although models have been developed them are clearly problematic. This essay aimed to compare the hard and soft approaches to HRM to establish if it was possible to incorporate them into a single model. The evidence provided showed that both of the approaches were based on different sets of assumptions with soft HRM placing emphasis on the human element and hard HRM emphasising the resource. It is clear that the incorporation of both hard and soft elements within one model would be problematic with one considering human nature and the other considering managerial control strategies. Apart from these differences each of the models are problematic within themselves. The main assumptions on which the soft approach is based such as flexibility, commitment and quality have been argued by critics to be ambiguous and open to debate. In many instances it is unclear as to what exactly the model is referring to when it uses these concepts. They can take the form of many different meanings and interpretations and if interpreted wrongly can even finish up with a practice, which is hard in approach rather than soft. These three concepts were also viewed by critics as being incompatible and difficult to achieve in practice. This is a major factor that needs to be considered when models are being developed, they may work theoretically but do they work in practice. There are many conflicts and tensions that are evident between these two models such as the soft placing emphasis on self-expression and high trust and the hard model emphasises direction and low trust, this makes it extremely difficult to place the two together in a single model. They both consider strategic integration between business strategies and the HR policies but from conflicting viewpoints. At present the literature is incomplete making it difficult for a single model of HRM to be developed. The flaws in the current models either soft or hard are evident and further work needs to be carried out to clarify exactly what each of the terms within the models is referring to. Theyre a number of weaknesses within the models and these need to be considered and improved. If there was more clarity within the models then perhaps it would be possible to even take elements that are positive from each to create an overall model or theory, which could be used in practice.
